Horse Rug Buying Guide

Understanding how to match your horse’s needs with the right rug is key to keeping them comfortable – no matter the season or reason.

Whether you're exploring options for horse rugs in Australia or looking for the ideal balance of breathability, warmth, waterproofing and protection, this guide will help you find the perfect fit for your equine companion.

How to check if your horse is comfortable in their rug

Learning to read your horse's comfort when rugged is straightforward if you look for these signs:

  • Your horse might be too cold if they shiver, have cold ears, stiff or raised hairs, or huddle with others.
  • Your horse is probably too warm in his rug if he's sweating (check the rib cage, not just the shoulder) or seems unusually restless or thirsty.
  • Regularly check under the rug for even warmth. Cool or raised hair suggests the need for a warmer rug, while dampness means they’re too warm.

Factors to consider when rugging

1. Your horse's coat

Horses naturally insulate themselves with a thick winter coat that traps heat by standing the hair on end. However, this insulation fails in wet or windy conditions, as rain flattens the hair and wind removes trapped warmth. Using a light rug on a hairy horse can also flatten the hair, reducing its insulating power and potentially making the horse colder. For horses with thin winter coats or for maintaining a short coat for showing, rugs are essential to provide warmth and prevent thick coat growth.

2. Weather conditions

Horses with thick winter coats can stay warm even in freezing temperatures, but weather conditions like rain, wind, and humidity can change everything. A wet coat loses its insulating power, and strong winds can cut through the hair, chilling your horse to the skin. So, while your horse might be fine without a rug on a dry 20°C day, they might need a lightweight, waterproof rug if it’s rainy or windy, even at milder temperatures.

Keep in mind that what feels "cold" can vary, especially in Australia.

For example, a Queensland horse accustomed to 19–21°C winters might find 13°C chilly if moved to a southern state, even if local horses don’t. In regions like Victoria and Tasmania, where sudden shifts in weather are common, heavy rain and icy winds can make conditions feel much harsher, even at moderate temperatures. This means you may need to rug your horse more thoughtfully, choosing waterproof or wind-resistant rugs to keep them comfortable as they adjust to the cooler, more unpredictable climate.

Horses typically take 10-21 days to adjust to colder temperatures, so they might need a little extra warmth while they acclimatise.

3. Age and health

Foals and older horses have a harder time keeping themselves warm than an animal in his prime, so a rug might boost their comfort levels and help them stay healthy. Likewise, an ill horse will benefit from an extra coat while their immune defences are low.

Best summer horse rugs

The best types of rugs to use during summer are those that provide breathability and sun and insect protection. These include:

1. Fly mesh rugs

Both the Euro Mesh 270gsm and the Euro-Lite 140gsm rugs offer excellent airflow, UV protection, and insect protection. While both are durable, each has unique advantages:

  • Euro Mesh 270gsm: Ideal for robust coverage with extra strength and durability, while keeping your horse protected from flies and insects.
  • Euro-Lite 140gsm: Lightweight alternative for ultimate summer comfort while maintaining protection. Great for keeping most biting insects at bay.

Both options are designed to keep your horse comfortable and protected, so the choice depends on your horse’s specific needs and the level of coverage required.

2. Ripstop rugs

A ripstop rug is generally a cotton or polyester blend rug that often incorporates ripstop. They are not waterproof but dry out quickly, making them great for year-round use. It’s a general, all-purpose rug that:

  • Keeps the sun off your horse's coat
  • Prevents the coat from fading while helping to keep your horse's coat clean and short
  • Provides lightweight insulation on cool nights and insect protection

All of our fabrics at Caribu are made on automated, tensioned looms, ensuring superior quality. Unlike manual looms, these fabrics maintain integrity over time, significantly extending the rug's lifespan.

3. Hybrid rugs

Hybrid horse rugs use two fabric types. The most popular design combines a polycotton ripstop body with mesh in the skirts and neckline, offering:

  • Insect protection
  • High airflow
  • Protection for delicate coats

4. Flag rugs

Flag rugs are very lightweight, open-weave polycotton rugs, similar to cheesecloth. They are ideal in very hot climates, but not as strong as others in the summer range.

Best winter horse rugs

The best types of rugs to use during winter are those that provide warmth, insulation, and protection against rain and wind. These include:

1. Wool rugs

Wool rugs make great under rugs or stable rugs for cooler months. As a natural fiber, wool is breathable, insulating, and more durable than polar fleece. Most wool rugs are blended with other fibers, but higher wool content means better insulation.

2. Polar fleece rugs

Polar fleece is a popular choice for under rugs, travel rugs, or stable rugs in cooler months. While not as durable as wool, it’s a budget-friendly option. Our Caribu Polar Fleece is a thick, 300gsm anti-pilling fleece, offering better longevity compared to thinner, 220gsm options that wear out quickly. Always choose anti-pilling fleece for superior performance.

3. Synthetic waterproof turnout rugs

For cold or wet weather, a waterproof turnout rug is most appropriate. Generally, synthetic rugs are most suitable as they are light, 100% waterproof, and dry out easily. The only downside is they do need to be removed when the weather clears in the warmer months as your horse can overheat in them once the sun comes out and humidity goes up.
